I read this series so long ago, and just remembered about it. It was so beautiful.
My favorite character used to be Alice, I even named a cat after her. But now I realize how evil she was. She snapped the necks of bunnies... like, girl, eat a frickin’ apple! ?
And Grimalkin seemed so cool, until I remembered she tried to kill a 15-year-old just because her community of witches wanted her to.
Also, the Spook was pretty sexist. I still like Tom’s apprentice (forgot her name), but she died. ?
And I guess the dogs were okay. But two of them died. ?
And Alice’s nice relative was a good character.
Some of of the books were pretty trippy. So. Much. Stuff. Happened.
The author obviously had a huge imagination. I remember there was a whole species of humanoids for one entire book, and Alice went to other realms in another. GOOD stuff.
I kind of think Joseph Delaney made up names, but I remember my mom got mad when I told her about the Kabbalos, since Kabbalah is Jewish mysticism. Also, witch Sabbaths are called that because people in the olden days thought Jews celebrating the Shabat were evil witches.
I think what I appreciate most from the series is that dark, rainy-day feeling, and the wild creativity of it.
Thanks!
